Getting started with Microsoft Office Word: Week One

This four week course introduces the user to the Word program in the Microsoft Office suite, and through hands-on activities shows the use of various features of formatting and common word processing skills.

Do First

Do First:   Create a name tag with your name in a large font size, in landscape format.

TOPICS:

  • Ribbon...what is it?  How is it organized?
  • Fonts...what are they?  How do we change them?
  • Page orientation: Portrait vs. Landscape

Party Invitation

Exercise: Create a party invitation like the sample handout

  1. Open Word, this generates a new empty Word document
  2. Save As/Browse
    • Location: Desktop
    • Filename:  Party Invitation
  3. Type all 9 lines of text on the invitation into your Word document
    • Hint: press the Enter key after each line.  We will format and space later.
  4. Space the lines of text (click the cursor in front of a row and press enter)
  5. Bullet the lines of text (highlight text, Home/Paragraph/Bullet button)
  6. Change the lines of text to Italics (highlight text, Home /Font/Italics button)
  7. Change the lines of text to Bold (highlight text, Home/Font/Bold button)
  8. Change font size (highlight text, Home/Font/Font size dropdown)
  9. Change font color (highlight text, Home/Font/Font color button)
  10. Change alignment of the text (highlight text, Home/Paragraph/Center Align button)
  11. Insert a picture at the top (balloons or other birthday theme, as you wish) (place the cursor, Insert/Illustrations/Online Pictures/Search for balloon or cake)
  12. Create page border (Design/Page Background/Page Borders button)
    • Setting, Box
    • Style, 2 lines
    • Color, whatever you wish
    • Width, thicker
  13. Run Spell & Grammar Check (Review/Proofing/Spelling & Grammar)
  14. Save document

Challenge: Email the document to yourself as an attachment.
