Getting started with Microsoft Office Word: Week Two

This four week course introduces the user to the Word program in the Microsoft Office suite, and through hands-on activities shows the use of various features of formatting and common word processing skills.

Create an invitation for a Groundhog Day party

There is no handout.  Use last week’s exercise as a general guide.  Change the details as follows:

  • To be held at the library on February 2, 2018 from 6:00-10:00pm (Not really!)
  • Insert a picture of a Winter/Spring image, or a groundhog, or a map of Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania.
  • Enter the RSVP as your email or cplcomputers2@outlook.com
  • Save it to the desktop as “Groundhog Day Party”, and print it out if you wish

Create a resume with formatting

  1. Open one of the files below named ‘Name_draft’ in Word
  2. Use the Save As procedure:
    • Location: Desktop
    • Filename:  Name resume
  3. Change margins to “Narrow” (Layout/Page Setup/Margins/Narrow)
  4. Create a page border: box, black, single wide line (Design/Page Background/Page Borders)
  5. Highlight all text and change the font type to Arial Narrow, font size 12pt (Home/Font/Font Size and Type)
  6. Center align the name and address information (Home/Paragraph/Center Align button)
    • Also change Name to Bold and 16pt (Home/Font/ Bold button and Font Size)
  7. Highlight the Objective, Professional Experience, Skills, Education headers and change them to uppercase (Home/Font/lower right arrow/All Caps)
  8. Highlight the job titles and schools attended and make them Bold (Home/Font/Bold button)
  9. Move the Dates over to the right side of the page (click cursor in front of date and press the Tab button)
  10. Create space between job titles and description below. Space out schools as well.
  11. Indent all descriptions (Home/Paragraph/Increase indent)
  12. Highlight the Key Agenda items and make them bulleted (Home/Paragraph/Bullet button)
  13. Insert a table in the Skills section.  2 rows and 2 columns. (Insert/Table)
    • Text in 4 boxes “Leadership, Negotiation, Public Speaking, Diplomacy”
    • Re-size and remove borders
  14. Perform Spell & Grammar Check
  15. Save document, and print it out if you wish
